Lakeland Ascents – 1-day Navigation Course above Grasmere

Today we took Mick from Chorley out on a bespoke 1-day Navigation Course. Mick had done a bit of nav training in the past, but wanted to refresh these old skills and learn some new ones. Mick was conscious that although he was fairly happy following paths in the fells, he wasn’t always able to identify exactly where he was and felt that he would struggle when the path disappeared or the weather and visibility changed for the worst.

We met Mick in Grasmere and looked at basic navigation strategies such as map orientation and identifying tick-off features and overshoot features before we climbed onto Silver Howe in glorious sunshine to put Mick’s new skills to the test.

Up on Silver Howe Mick got to grips with contour interpretation and compass work, including more advanced skills such as how to triangulate his position on the map by taking bearings of the features around him. Our day ended with a walk back to Grasmere via Brigstone Moss, a beautiful area of the Lakes that is often overlooked by those visiting the Grasmere area.

Thanks for a fantastic day Mick – I hope you enjoy putting your new skills to good use and have some great days out.
