A varied week of freelance work

I’ve had a very varied few days working freelance for a couple of companies in the Lakes.

Last Thursday it was a pleasure to work for our friend over at Highpoint Mountain Guides leading a corporate guided walk. Fellow guide Neil and I took the group of 15 around the Langdale Pikes and Rossett Pike in great weather, which was a pleasant surprise considering it rained up until the point that we set off!

Saturday saw me working for Highpoint Mountain Guides again, this time on Scafell Pike leading a group of 8 on their night time leg of a 3 Peak Challenge event. The conditions were terrible (massive understatement) which made navigation very difficult: driving rain, a cold wind, very low cloud and hill fog meant we were walking on compass bearings from the start of Hollow Stones all the way to the summit and back. Despite all this, we managed a very respectable time of 3hrs and 13mins – with the group making the whole 3 Peak Challenge in under 23 hours. Good effort guys!

Tuesday to Thursday things changed again, with me working for Summitreks on a multi-activity week for a primary school from West Yorkshire. The activities were based out of Buttermere which is a part of the Lakes that I don’t get to often, probably because it’s quite a way from our base in Kendal! Tuesday was mountain walk day and fellow instructor Jamie and I coaxed/bribed 16 10 year olds up Rannerdale Knotts in hot sun but accompanied by great views of Buttermere and over to Honister.

Wednesday I took 8 young people and a teacher up Mill Beck for a spot of gorge scrambling and team building. This is a great little ghyll for this age-group and was something of a ‘first ascent’ both for me and for Summitreks! It worked well though!

This just left Thursday which was rock climbing in Honister Pass. I rigged one of the Honister boulders for the group to have a climb on (which involved some serious thinking outside of the box!) and all had a great time and managed some tricky climbs.

A great week of work and some great variety! I even managed to avoid most of the rain! Thanks to everyone for the work.
