Climbing, a corporate guided walk & more climbing

After getting wet in the gorge with Hayley and Ross on Monday, it was nice to spend the day in the sunshine in Langdale on Tuesday, working for Summitreks on a day of climbing for two groups of primary school kids.

Thursday was a bit of a contrast – the weather was shocking as a big horrible warm front sat over the country. I was working for Highpoint and we had a group of 25odd clients for a corporate guided walk over Wetherlam and Great Carrs.

Today it was back to Langdale again, working for Highpoint. My clients were 2 16 year old lads from Peterborough – Sam and Jamie. They’d climbed a bit before, but were keen to learn some skills and technique, before putting these to the test on a few climbs.

We headed to Lower Scout crag in Great Langdale to warm up and the lads quickly picked up skills such as tying in the rope and belaying safely. We looked at a few movement skills as Sam and Jamie easily ticked off the easier lines on the crag.

To test them, I shifted the ropes around and the lads had a crack at the Cubs Crack (the massively under-graded ‘Severe’ that runs up the centre of the crag). This defeated them but they still managed to get up a VS 5a just to the right!

After lunch, we moved crags to Stickle Barn crag a little higher up the hillside. This is a great spot for beginners looking to push on a bit. The rock isn’t polished at all and the climbs are interesting, technical and longer than those at Scout. Sam and Jamie ticked a few lines, getting gradually harder, with another hard-for-the-grade successful ascent of a VS 5a before it was time to call it a day.

A little quieter this week, but its nice to have a few free days! Thanks to all and to Highpoint and Summitreks for putting the work our way.
