Low level guided walks: Elterwater & Tilberthwaite

Over the last couple of days we’ve been running some guided walks for Russ and Susan, who are over in the UK from San Francisco and were keen to explore the Lake District. Russ and Susan are experienced hikers, but wanted a leisurely time in the Lakes, so we put together two short, but interesting days for them.

We picked up Russ and Susan on Saturday morning from Gilpin Lodge and headed over to Elterwater, before wandering through Low Wood (taking care to keep an eye out for red squirrels) and onto Loughrigg Terrace. After a visit to Rydal Caves, we climbed on to the summit of Loughrigg to enjoy the views out over Windermere and across to the Langdale Pikes.

A short descent brought us down to Skelwith Bridge where we lunched in the excellent Chesters cafe before wandering leisurely back along the Cumbrian Way to Elterwater.

Russ had heard good things about Bedrock, the Lakes own gin, so we popped into Windermere to pick up a bottle on the way back to Gilpin Lodge. A great day.

On Sunday the drizzle had set in, but as we had no plans to go high this wasn’t really a problem. We headed over to Tilberthwaite for a pleasant low ¬†level walk over to Cathedral Quarry for an explore of this amazing old slate cavern.

Heading over the hill from Tilberthwaite, we rounded a corner and were surprised to find several highland cows sitting in the middle of the path, relaxing out of the rain. The cows let us pass without drama and we soon dropped down towards Little Langdale Tarn and Slater’s Bridge.¬†After exploring Cathedral Quarry and exiting the cavern through one of the old mine tunnels it was time to head over to the excellent Three Shires Inn for a well deserved break and a pint of the equally excellent Hawkshead Red and Esthwaite Bitter.

Braving the drizzle once more, we headed back to Tilberthwaite before dropping into Ambleside to allow Russ and Susan to buy some new outdoor kit from the excellent Climbers Shop.

A fantastic couple of days with a lovely couple. Great to meet you both and we hope to see you again in the future.
