Mountain Leader (Summer) Refresher: Silver Howe

Rick joined us today for the first of 2 days of an ML and nav refresher. Rick unfortunately got deferred on his ML assessment recently so was keen to ensure that his skills were up to scratch before heading back for reassessment.

We headed up onto Silver Howe in some very low clag, looking at contour appreciation and some detailed navigation strategies. After spending the morning on the super-detailed 1:25000 map we switched to the 1:50K as this was one of the areas that Rick struggled on during his assessment. Navigation on a 1:50000 map in a really featured undulating area, far from the path is a challenge to even the professionals but Rick did really well and I saw his skills improve significantly as the day progressed.

Rick will be back with us in a month or so for day 2 of his course. The plan is for more detailed 1:50K nav, some rope work and to cap it all, a few hours of night navigation somewhere high on the fell.

A great day on the hill – well done Rick.
