Learning to lead on Milestone Buttress

Are you ready to take the step onto the ‘sharp end’? Spend either 2 or 4 days rock climbing with our experienced instructors and learn the fine art of leading traditional rock climbs.

Our lead climbing course will take you through the nuances of different types of rock protection until ‘how and where’ to place wires, nuts, Friends, ‘draws and hexes becomes familiar to you.

We will then support you as you lead your first trad rock climbs. We will help you learn how to make the most of the natural protection that the rock offers you. When you top out, exhilarated from your achievement, we will teach you how to make yourself safe, place anchors, build belays and bring up your second safely.

As well as learning the technical skills, our lead climbing courses also teach you about route choice, rock climbing grades, guidebook interpretation and venue choice. We will also look at psychological techniques to help you deal with the mental challenges of being ‘on the lead’.

We believe strongly in tailored and bespoke courses for you as a climber. Our focus will be 100% on your ambitions, rapidly develop your skills and accelerate your climbing career. Our 2 day course will cover as much as time allows and will give you a great introduction to lead climbing. If you want to really develop your skills, 4 days gives us loads of scope for moving you on significantly as a climber and really helping you move up the grades.

Ages and abilities: We can cater for all ages and abilities, from the new climber to those wanting to push their lead grade.

Group sizes and ratios: We put your safety first so the maximum instructor:client ratio that we will work to is 1:2 – if your party is bigger than 2 people then there will be more than one instructor.

Venue: We will choose a venue that suits your aspirations and minimises the travelling that you need to do. We are spoilt for choice in the Lakes, Snowdonia and in Scotland too.

Kit: A kit list will be shared with you when you book, but all you really need are warm and waterproof ‘outdoor’ clothes and footwear. If needed we will lend you a harnesses, helmet and rock gear. We advise that you use your own kit if you have it so that you get familiar with it under expert tuition. We will provide all ropes.

Times: Generally we would look to meet at around 09.30 and be finished by around 16.30. We believe in bespoke, tailored days so we will always do our best to work around your other commitments and time constraints.
