Lead climbing course

LA9 202x304 Lead climbing course

Enjoying the challenge of leading a climb

Are you ready to take the step onto the ‘sharp end’? Spend two days rock climbing with our experienced instructors and learn the fine art of leading traditional rock climbs.

Our lead climbing course will take you through the nuances of different types of rock protection until ‘how and where’ to place wires, nuts, Friends, draws and hexes becomes familiar to you.

We will then support you as you lead your first rock climbs and will help you learn how to make the most of the natural protection that the rock offers you. When you top out, exhilarated from your achievement, we will teach you how to make yourself safe, place anchors, build belays and bring up your second safely.

As well as learning the technical skills, our lead climbing courses also teach you about route choice, rock climbing grades, guidebook interpretation and venue choice. We will also look at psychological techniques to help you deal with the mental challenges of being on the sharp end.

Our courses can be run from pretty much anywhere in the mountains of the Lake District, the Peak District, Wales or Scotland.

Ages and abilities: We can cater for all ages and abilities, from the new climber to those wanting to push their lead grade.

Group sizes and ratios: We put your safety first so the maximum instructor:client ratio that we will work to is 1:2 – if your party is bigger than 2 people then there will be more than one instructor.

Venue: We will choose a venue that suits your aspirations and minimises the travelling that you need to do. We are spoilt for choice in the Lakes, Snowdonia and in Scotland too.

Kit: We will share a kit list with you when you book, but all you really need are warm and waterproof ‘outdoor’ clothes and footwear. You can borrow harnesses, helmets and rock gear from us, but we’d advise that you use your own kit if you have it so that you can get used to using it. We will provide all ropes.

Times: Generally we would look to meet at around 09.30 and be finished by around 16.30. However, we believe in bespoke, tailored days so we will always do our best to work around your other commitments and time constraints.
