Scrambling with Lakeland Ascents

Let us help you to bridge the gap between mountain walking and climbing by getting your hands on the rock and learning the skills needed to safely and efficiently take on the classic scrambles of the Lake District, Snowdonia and the Scottish Highlands.

Whether you are an experienced walker looking to get onto Grade 1 ridges and buttresses, or whether you are looking to learn the technical skills to safely break into Grade 3+ ground, we can help.

Join us on a 1 or 2 day course where our expert instructors will teach you the skills needed to become a proficient scrambler, including:

  • Guidbook interpretation and route finding
  • Movement skills on different types of terrain
  • Selecting and using appropriate anchors quickly
  • How to protect short pitches of difficult ground
  • Building quick, efficient and safe belays
  • Different types of belaying: the body belay, the direct belay, the belay plate and guide mode
  • Taking coils and shortroping
  • Descending scrambling ground
  • Abseiling safely

Our courses can be run from pretty much anywhere in the mountains of the Lake District, Wales or Scotland.

Ages and abilities: We can cater for all ages and abilities, but being a competent mountain walker who is used to exposed ground will help you get the most out of this course.

Group sizes and ratios: We put your safety first so the maximum instructor:client ratio that we will work to is 1:4 – if your party is bigger than 2 people then there will be more than one instructor.

Venue: We will choose a venue that minimises the travelling that you need to do. We are spoilt for choice in the Lakes, Snowdonia and in Scotland too.

Kit: We will share a kit list with you when you book but all you really need are study boots and mountain clothing. We will provide all ropes.

Times: Generally we would look to meet at around 09.30 and be finished by around 16.30. However, we believe in bespoke, tailored days so we will always do our best to work around your other commitments and time constraints.
