Today we were pleased to welcome an old client back – Sean joined us last year for an ML Refresher (and passed) – today was the first day of his 1:1 winter skills course. Despite worries of depleted snow packs due to the recent thaw, we found plenty to do on Raise and there were even folk skiing. The snow has stripped back a fair old bit, but we’ve had snow showers most of the afternoon down to about 400m, some of them heavy. Things were looking a lot more wintery on our walk out.
A wintery day up high today for day 2 of Sean’s 1:1 winter skills course. Yesterday’s snow has left quite a covering and winter has definitely returned to the high fells. It’s also left an unstable layer of windslab on E aspects and in sheltered locations. Today was all about belays – buried axes, snow bollards and stompers (and trying to make them fail… unsuccessfully!) A report from the second course that we’re running today to follow later.
