Multi-pitch climbing course
Are you a single-pitch climber ready for the adventure of long multi-pitch mountain routes? Although amazing fun, multi-pitch climbing presents new challenges to the single-pitch rock climber, such as complex route finding, tricky stance management, and potentially difficult descents.
Our multi-pitch climbing course will teach you the skills necessary to safely and efficiently tackle big routes in the high mountains.
We strongly believe in tailored and bespoke courses that focus 100% on your ambitions, rapidly develop your skills, and accelerate your climbing career, so the course content will be unique to you. However, the list below will give you an idea of the sort of skills we’d be covering.
Along with plenty of climbing, our courses cover the following areas (and more!):
- Gear selection for multi-pitch routes
- Guidebook interpretation and route finding in complex terrain
- Building simple and complex multi-pitch belays with in-reach and out-of-reach anchors
- Stance management to avoid rope tangles and twists
- Hanging belay management
- Strategic route planning – knowing when to ‘run it out’ or keep pitches short
- Increasing efficiency and speed on your climb
- Communication with your partner on multi-pitch climbs
- Safe descent using multi-pitch abseiling skills
- Basic rescue techniques.
Our 2-day intro to multi-pitch climbing course provides a great introduction to the skills needed to climb efficiently on mountain crags. We’ll cover as much as time allows, but for those seeking a more comprehensive experience, our 4-day course offers us loads more opportunity to improve you significantly as a climber, and with these additional days, we’ll have more time to climb some awe-inspiring mountain routes.
Our Multi-pitch Climbing Course can run in the Lake District and Snowdonia. For courses in Scotland, please see Highland Ascents.
In addition, we also offer a variety of other rock climbing courses, these are:
- Guided rock climbing – let us guide you on your dream climb.
- Intro to outdoor rock climbing – take your first steps as an outdoor rock climber.
- Lead climbing course – get on the sharp end and learn to lead trad rock climbs safely.
- Self rescue for climbers – the toolkit every climber should have.

Ages and Abilities: We can accommodate all ages and abilities, but being comfortable with seconding VDiff would allow you to get the most out of this course.
Group Sizes and Ratios: We prioritise your safety, so the maximum instructor to client ratio we work to is 1:2. If your party is larger than two people, there will be more than one instructor.
Venue: We will select a venue that minimises the traveling you need to do. We are spoilt for choice in the Lakes, Snowdonia, and Scotland.
Kit: A kit list will be provided when you book, but all you really need are warm, waterproof “outdoor” clothing and footwear. If needed, we will lend you harnesses, helmets, and rock gear. We advise using your own kit if you have it so that you become familiar with it under expert instruction. We will provide all ropes.
Times: Generally, we aim to meet at around 09:15 and finish by around 16:30. We believe in bespoke, tailored courses, so we always try our best to work around your other commitments and time constraints.
