3 Peaks Challenge – Extreme Option

20130308 LA4 Edit 304x304 3 Peak Challenge (Extreme)

Awesome Grade 3 scrambling terrain

The National 3 Peak Challenge is becoming more and more popular –  you’ve probably heard of it right? You’ll attempt to summit Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in a 24 hour period. Tough? Challenging? Sure thing… but if you’re used to being in the mountains then the walking isn’t going to phase you and perhaps you’ve already ticked the ‘tourist route’ that you’ll follow on each peak?

So how about a challenge that summits the highest mountain in the UK and Scotland, the highest in England and the highest in Wales, but via routes that are not only quieter than the tourist routes but are significantly more challenging? Routes that involve getting your hands on rock and may even involve some actual roped climbing on the way?

This isn’t a 24 hour challenge – that kind of misses the point. This is a 3 day challenge that you can do on 3 consecutive days or even spread over a longer period. Read on for more info.

We offer 2 different versions of the 3 Peak Challenge – Extreme Option: Severe and Very Severe!

The Severe option: 3 long days that all include Grade 1 scrambling on Britain’s highest mountains:

  • Ben Nevis by the knife-edged Carn Mor Dearg (CMD) Arête
  • Scafell Pike via the longest scramble in the Lake District –  Cockley Pike Ridge
  • Snowdon via the classic knife-edge of Crib Goch

The Very Severe option: again, 3 long days, but this time you’re going to be on technical scrambling terrain at Grades 2 and 3. Basically you’re going to be rock climbing.

  • Ben Nevis via Ledge Route (Grade 2) on the North Face and a descent of the CMD Arête
  • Scafell Pike by Round How (Grade 2) and Great End (Grade 3)
  • Snowdon via the Clogwyn y Person Arête (Grade 3). The Grand Finale, taking you triumphantly to the summit of Snowdon.

Scrambling in Snowdonia

Ages and abilities: These are serious challenges and are suitable for adults only. For the Severe version you need experience of mountain walking and a very good level of fitness. For the Very Severe option experience of easier scrambling (e.g. Grade 1) or of rock climbing is desirable. Both require a good head for heights.

Group sizes and ratios: We run private challenges for you and your group. The instructor to client ratio reflects the seriousness of these challenges. The Severe version runs at a ratio of 1 instructor per 6 clients (1:6) and the minimum group size is 3. The Very Severe ratio involves roped scrambling so runs at a ratio of 1 instructor per 2 clients (1:2).

Kit:  We will share a kit list with you when you book, but all you really need are warm and waterproof ‘outdoor’ clothes and sturdy footwear. We will provide all safety equipment such as harnesses and helmets. All our kit is in excellent condition and is replaced regularly.
