Helvellyn Guided Walks

At 950m, Helvellyn is one of the most famous and highest mountains in the Lake District. It’s one of only four 3,000ft+ summits in England and offers walkers spectacular views, including some of the best ridge walking in Britain, thanks to Striding Edge.

With Lakeland Ascents, you can experience the thrill of climbing Helvellyn with confidence, walking with an experienced mountain guide who will not only guide you but also teach you mountain and navigation skills along the way, if you’re interested in learning.

We recommend taking on Helvellyn only if you already have a good level of fitness and are comfortable walking for 6-7 hours on uneven terrain, which includes steep ascents.

A typical day and walking route up Helvellyn:

Option 1: The Helvellyn Edges – Striding Edge & Swirral Edge Horseshoe

Starting in Glenridding, this is the most popular route to climb Helvellyn. Our professional mountain guides will guide you safely along the knife-edge of Striding Edge and Swirral Edge as we ascend the mighty Helvellyn. Please note that a good head for heights is required as both of these edges have significant exposure.

Option 2: Helvellyn via the East Ridge of Nethermost Pike

This is a quieter alternative to Striding Edge, where we can fully appreciate the beauty of Nethermost Cove. We will hardly see any people until we reach the summit of Helvellyn. You can return via Striding Edge or Swirral Edge, or retrace your steps back to Dollywaggon Pike.
